Definitely a little behind by date, but in November I will post entries from my devotional Thanksliving: Attitude of Gratitude book each day. I hope it is useful as we prepare for Thanksgiving, which should be every day.
Day 1
Today let us remember the legacy of faith presented to us by those who have lived the Christian life before us. Perhaps it is the prayers of a grandmother or parent that has brought you to faith. Perhaps it is…..
MY PSALM 169 (4.17.2016)
O Lord, my Lord and Savior
I was stressed and distressed
My body tired, my mind exhausted
Until I turned to Your Word.
Like the balm in Gilead,
Like the refreshing streams where
You make me lie down in Your peace,
You comforted me, renewed me
Said to me, “I am Your Lord.
Why can’t You let Me be Your strength?”
And with your right hand of fellowship
You lifted my spirit, You grew my strength.

For those of us who are conflicted and disgusted with the political campaign, I offer this, “My Psalm” number 180:
MY PSALM 180:
Heavenly Father, Who has forgiven our sins
And iniquities, and taken us again and again
Into Your loving arms as prodigals,
We thank you and praise Your Holy Name.
For You have forgiven us seventy times seventy
And seek to bring us to Yourself again and again.
For we, like those before us who sinned against…..
In the face of the storm, let these two favorite hymns bless us: and live in Psalm 34 today. Who trusts in God, a strong abode In heaven and earth possesses. Who looks in love to Christ above, No fear his heart oppresses. In Thee alone, dear Lord, we own Sweet hope and consolation; Our shield from foes, our balm for woes, Our great and sure salvation. Though Satan’s wrath beset our path, and worldly scorn assail us;…..
Continuing with yesterday’s theme of “the power of awe,” this quote just makes me smile. And a smile is a sign of inward joy. Even when things are not just the way we plan them, and life has not brought us to the place of sheer happiness, moments in each day can bring us enough joy to make the rest tolerable. So when the negatives attack, think about this quote I just read: “Joy is what happens when we allow…..
The new Good Housekeeping magazine and a comment from yesterday’s women’s Bible class are centering my thoughts today on “the power of awe.” Take time today to say, “Wow! that’s just wonderful” about as many routine things you can. It will reduce stress, increase joy, dilute the bad news being blown out of proportion in the news, and give us more reasons to thank God. I’m celebrating that I have a car to share with Paul while theirs is in…..
Solomon prayed for it; we all could use a greater measure of it; I pray for our country’s people to turn to God, asking for His guidance and the wisdom to come to our senses.
Luke 21:15: “…for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!”
A friend gave me a hand-painted scripture picture with this quote. It sits just about my mouse, (yes, I…..
I read through the book of Ezekiel yesterday on my journey through the Bible this year. I was struck by the message over and over again, in my vernacular, God will not be mocked.
It is a difficult book of prophecy, but the same story as repeated in Judges, in the stories about the kings, and indeed in the Genesis story of The Fall. Man is corrupt, and there is no good in us when compared to the God Who…..
I’m thinking I need to tune out the political nastiness for a while because it’s becoming a source of sickness of soul. Instead, I will cleanse my mind, fill it with God thoughts, and try to salvage what good will that usually dwells there, bringing a smile to my countenance, a grateful spirit to my life, and a knowledge that God is in full control,t I will live by His precepts, and reject our system’s joy in creating chaos and…..
SOMETIMES ANGELS WEAR CLOTHES
By Betty Whitaker Jackson
Change of plans. Late night. Not unusual. Days are just not long enough. Phil feels trapped in his busy career as an architect. Some think Phil Baxter leads a charmed life. Blessed, even. Maybe so.
John Stewart Robbins calls him at 4:30 inviting him to buzz by his office at 5:30. When J.S. calls, Phil listens. Priority, second only to Cathy and the kids, of course.
Drop the project blueprints. Roll…..
