I’ve been wondering why the Bible suggests so often that we rest. I thought the American work ethic wants us to be productive every living minute, to be accomplishing things: shopping, running, exercising, cleaning, redecorating, planning, interacting, serving, and all the other “-ings” we are advised to be doing every livelong minute.
Then Jeremiah asserts this message: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is,…..
I don’t know what I would do without Christian fellowship. On three separate occasions this week, I have been blessed to be in special situations with groups of loved Christians, and in a small way, as a mortal, I’ve experienced what heaven must be like.
Sunday worship is always a joy because fellow Christians join in worship, praise, and study of the Word. Tuesday mornings I meet with members of a longstanding women’s fellowship called the Magnolias, where we share…..
Do you remember Thornton Wilder’s insightful play, Our Town? In it Emily returns from heaven to earth for just one more day. She chooses an ordinary day, by anyone else’s standards.
I had one of those days on Saturday. It was, by anyone else’s standards, and even mine, an ordinary day. But it was full of Godincidences, and the joy of doing, going, enjoying, and I’m grateful for it.
I’m reminded that in Larry’s words, any day we’re seeing daisies…..
Tuesdays I meet for early breakfast with a lovely group of women fondly called The Magnolias. When I returned home, my little driveway garden arrested my attention on an Easter lily with five open blossoms and one getting ready to open. Such pure beauty. I planted this lily three years ago, so hoping it would survive, and survive it did, beautifully.
Isn’t it wonderful that past hopes become present realities? Two years ago this week we were eagerly awaiting the…..
So I’m working on my memoir, and wrote this piece about my first year of teaching. Can anyone relate?
Rain Reflections
Not every day is sunny in my garden. Today the heavens are teeming with a morning rain washing God’s world. The heavens have opened, and a steady downpour splashes the pavement, lands with some considerable force on the newly opened Easter lilies I’ve waited for weeks to open. I’m sure it’s spoiling someone’s wedding day, planned in an outdoor…..
In the devastation, let us consider the words Fred Rogers’ mother taught him: Whenever there is a tragedy, look at the helpers.
Rejoice at the noble teachers who shielded their students, risking their lives for others.
Rejoice at recovery workers toiling throughout the night, fueled by hope, driven by love, guided by faith.
Rejoice at those who have expressed thanksgiving to God for those they love and treasure, forgetting that materially, they have lost everything, but still cling to the…..
Job Loss is devastating. I’ve written a book about it: Job Loss: What’s Next? A Step by Step Action Plan. This week 192 great Brevard County School District teachers, with good evaluations and effective performance, will be given letters saying their services will no longer be needed in August for the next school year.
Each of these teachers has put endless hours of effort into teaching students. Each has given his/her evenings and weekends, time when they should be refreshing…..
There are few times in the lives of teachers and students as telling as the end of the school year. Whirlwind activities, concerts, programs, awards assemblies, baccalaureates, graduations, parties, yearbook signings, and, of course, examinations to prove that learning occurred.
There are many players: the teachers, the students, the parents, the administration, the caterers, the photographers, the audiences, the grandparents, the parents, the siblings, the gift-card distributors.
Ok, enough with the lists.
The really important point is that there are…..
It’s ironic we have “A” National Day of Prayer. For the Christian, every moment of every day is a constant time of prayer. Do you pray at mealtimes? Do you pray at traffic lights? Do you pray when you hear an ambulance pass? Do you pray after hearing despicable acts on TV? Do you pray before church? Do you pray as you send your children or husband out the door? Do you pray during elder and deacon meetings at church?…..
